Your blurb tells the audience what your book is about in as few words as possible. I try to keep mine under 200 words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a friend (Vincent Yam, go check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/Vincent-Yam\/author\/B09WGWR5N8\">his books<\/a>), I have a tried and true format for writing blurbs. In this article, I\u2019m going to break it down and show how I use it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Blurb Format<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/lBjIReRuaD1bD38ZwixQauDJ_XMebv3Gn1a0Hwih0OauKPPCiYLQVRqNj7Qs70QdoFO6G2B5-jVAERSdxE_cSsbL4wueGLMRk0j3gPE-kFp5MEyRh7V0GMeVOjBrMz3PAdOa5BTp8wl9EwMWs7_FBQw\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initial hook (1-2 lines tops)<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The hook is, arguably, the most important part of the blurb. It\u2019s what catches the reader\u2019s eye when they first start reading about your book. The hook needs to summarize what your story is about in about 1 to 2 sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples from my works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Freedom comes with a price, even among the skies.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014To the Sky<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Dragons aren\u2019t the answer to all the world\u2019s problems, but they certainly help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Serenity<br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When the King of Hell comes to call, you answer.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Sandalwood<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re all short and tell what the book is about from the beginning while being catchy, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Introduce MC and briefly the setting<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where we tell the reader who they should be rooting for, and where the story takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Tessa is the only child of the Winderian royal family. She\u2019s grown up sheltered in a world where magic is taboo. On the other hand, James is the sky pirate captain of Coincidence. He has the freedom of a mostly law-abiding civilian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014To the Sky<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This one starts with Tessa, one of the point of view characters. It also explains where she\u2019s from and has some small information on the setting. Then we learn about James, and learn that there are sky pirates in this setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Rueben has just been promoted to Captain of the Royal Guard\u2026Avery the High Paladin struggles to balance the demon attacks and the kingdom tearing away from the Church.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Serenity<br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We learn in Serenity\u2019s second part that Rueben and Avery are the main characters. We also learn Serenity\u2019s setting is the kingdom and Church.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Dakota Halloway is a witch in Silver Valley, Nevada. They own a successful metaphysical shop downtown, and they live with their demon companion named Lou. The city is teeming with all sorts of supernaturals\u2014both known and unknown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Sandalwood<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For Sandalwood, Dakota is the main character. The reader learns witches exist in this setting, alongside demons and other supernatural creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Introduce stakes<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we tell the reader what threatens the main character(s) of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It is one thing that Tessa\u2019s betrothed is an evil sorcerer that wants to take over Winderia by any means necessary, but what she does with that knowledge is much more complicated.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014To the Sky<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Tessa\u2019s betrothed is an evil sorcerer. What does she do about it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Young and eager to prove himself, [Rueben] sets out to wake a long-slumbering dragon and bring an end to the demon killing spree\u2026With the help of the rest of the Council, he puts pressure on the king to maintain the connection between the kingdom and The Way.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Serenity<br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rueben plans to summon a dragon to defeat demons killing his people. Avery has to contend with the king of the setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Something is killing witches around town. Dakota is positive it\u2019s a demon doing the killing, and has taken it upon themself to investigate the murders without the help of the police.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Sandalwood<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakota wants to stop the person\/thing killing the witches in their area.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Heighten stakes<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we take the stakes and heighten them. What happens to make the story more dangerous\/interesting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Running away gets her nowhere; not with James set out to bring her back to her parents.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014To the Sky<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Tessa runs away from home\u2014from her betrothed\u2014but is brought back home. How does she deal with the sorcerer now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Their different approaches will bring them closer to the demons than either of them ever wanted\u2014Rueben with the demons, and Avery with the man who\u2019s summoning them.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Serenity<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In Serenity, Rueben and Avery come face-to-face with the demons and the man who\u2019s summoning them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Then the King of Hell arrives and makes Dakota his new pet. He insists on being in every facet of Dakota\u2019s life, including the murder investigations.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Sandalwood<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakota gets a visitor\u2014the King of Hell\u2014who complicates every aspect of their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final hook (1-2 lines tops)<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The final hook summarizes the complications of the story. It should be short\u20141 to 2 lines at most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Perhaps, together, they can find a way to save the kingdom\u2014and her freedom.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014To the Sky<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Tessa and James team up to save the kingdom and give her the freedom she wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Together, they have to face down the demons or risk losing everything they\u2019ve worked for.<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Serenity<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rueben and Avery have to work together to take down the demons and the man summoning them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Can Dakota strike a new balance in their life while avoiding becoming the next victim?<\/p>\n<cite>\u2014Sandalwood<br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dakota has to find a balance in their life between the King of Hell and the thing killing witches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s it!
